Dating Fail #2

Rob had a bit of a crush on her. She was cute, smart, and nice—so after a few conversations, Rob asked her out. He was pretty excited about this, because the girl in question actually had some potential. And, let’s face it, regardless of gender, it’s not often we meet someone who really has potential.

They’re both people of discerning taste, so they made plans to see an indie movie. This particular film had gotten great reviews, and Rob was looking forward to seeing it. Things were looking good.

When they got to the theater, though, the movie they’d planned to see was sold out. Opting for plan B, they decided to see a different indie flick playing at the same theater. Sight unseen, they didn’t know what it was about. But hey, most of those movies are good, so the odds were in their favor.

The movie turned out to be a graphic morality drama about a back-alley abortionist in post-war Britain. The protagonist, a devoted housewife, is unveiled as the aforementioned back-alley, shall we say, "service provider" by a gory botched abortion that then gets her in uber-serious trouble with the law. Tragedy ensues, and apparently in a big way. In fact, if you IMDB this particular film, its plot keywords include but are not limited to: tragedy, unwanted pregnancy, police interrogation, miscarriage of justice, sexual assault, injustice, rape, double standard, and sexism.

All of which set the mood…miserably.

To make matters worse, the girl sitting next to Rob was religious. She was progressively religious enough for Rob to have been comfortable asking her out, but as he noted, Botched Abortion and Misery: The Movie didn’t really help his case.

Needless to say, he didn’t invite her back to his apartment.
